style sheets with dingbats in Quark

  so I have inherited this job at work ... Multy page Quark file.
  ..that has been CUT + PASTED!
  no Masters, no style sheets nothin.
  Now I'm trying to develop a style sheet for this multy bullited-many tabs layout.
  I have no problem creating a paragraph style sheet with "stone sans" but when I try to embed a character style of "zaph dingbat" ( u and v being used for triangular shapes at the start of each line)
  the whole paragraph changes
  to DINGBATS

  ...arghhhhhh
  heeeeelp me pleeeeeease.
