Yeah it seems like I am posting from 1999 but I have to currently learn it for producing a computer game using the 3D engine. Im just wondering if anyone else out there botheres with Director, I had previously given up on it a few years ago when Flash MX arrived.

director is extremely powerful compared to flash but they are for different markets really.
flash is the king of teh interwebs.
no doubt

the macromind era.... nostalghia!

Director is really, really powerful app. I used to use it a bunch.... but for far different purposes that Flash.
I believe that Maco-whatever will be ending it altogether and intigrate into Flash. I do though, feel that would suck as Director and Lingo allow for control andpower far beyond what Flash/XML engine ever really can. The biggest advantages to Director IMO are:
- sever load
- server control
- caching
- running apps directly w/in the Director engine
- controled enviro. systems design (ie- kiosks, projections, ect)
- lightweight, efficient code
- "middleware" type go between w/ other data sources or streams

every version of flash brings it closer to director.. they need to merge them.. i like the OS acess rights director has but these can be obtained by using 3rd party software like mprojector anyway.
- jpolk0
aren't director OS access rights al xtras anyway? it's been a while for me...

don't forget the video support in director. Flash is getting better but I would still go with director for multiple video feeds, full screen etc

agree with above.
Director what!? I haven't seen that program in 5 years.

I used Director when it was ver. 4
any changes since then?

v.4 haha, there's been updates.
v.7 was the big update, then in 8.5 i think, they introduced multi-user support.i've used it extensively since v.6 for interactive cd-rom/dvd development requiring loads of multimedia content, database support, small custom applications, etc..

I prefered flash (ver 4, 5) when I had to learn director. But know I'm getting used to the way of thinking of it and I really like it. As the others said, I really like the way you can (with some xtra) intertact with the system. But it seems that the developpement isn't getting really further.
Flash is the way to go know.

great call soda. the video support in Director has been much further for quite a while. it is still the best for custom apps, ect over flash.

You made one key comment though...3D. You can fake some stuff in Flash, but it doesn't support true 3D. Director does have Shockwave 3D support.
My vote is for Flash, with the exception of 3D. Our Director developers, that also do Flash, say Director is outdated and the workflow is "clunky" in comparison. I think Director will eventually phase out as Flash becomes more powerful.
Have fun.

There is only enough space in my brain for Actionscript.
