maybe its commercial or custom built. Also, can anyone recommend any good commercial forums that are out there.

I dout they would go elsewhere for a forum when they have some of the best coding geeks in town. Custom job for sure.
the only forum I recommend is Vanilla - http://getvanilla.com
very easy to built up around something else
