we had this computerguy around who said partitioning your HD is bad.
i think he is wrong.your comments or links to prove its a good thing.

was his name yada?

i swear by it.
disks are getting so huge, its ridiculous not to.
and what could be bad about isolating problematic files from the system, ie a font volume.
- horton0
i think Apple doesn't really encourage it because OS X is designed to be out-of-the-box and ready to go.

but your OS X disk needs LOTS of free space to perform at prime, plus all your installed apps need to be on the same volume..
so i guess if you have only 1 disk in your box and its under 100GB, partitioning might be a bad idea.
end.

one of the early os x's crash really hard on me years ago, nothing to be done, had to format to fix it. but i had 2 partitions, 10GB for the system and 30GB for my work.
I only had to format the 10GB and it saved me a lot of trouble and hair.partition = good

or just use extra disks... and if you have to do a full reformat (rarely needed as there are two less dramatic install types to try before you get to stage 3), just restore your work from the daily incremental backup that you should be doing. (what happens if you have a hardware failure on your main disk?).
partitioning= too much trouble sometimes

Experienced the same dilemma as jno.
My operating system went beserk, and I had to do a clean format of my primary partition.
My second partition remained "clean," as it only contained work instead of all the system files.
Plus (at least I know on PC), you can limit encryption of your data on specific partitions, instead of the entire HD.
Likewise, you can probably find files a lot faster, since the computer can be limited to only searching specific partition instead of the entire disk.
In summary, unless you have a ridiculously small HD, I don't see any major arguments against partitioning ones HD.
