p.s. if you're going to be here for the long run it's def worth it to stay, but anything less than like 5 years is not.
btw that's all via a real estate agent trying to sell us a place.

That's some smart thinking. If you invest right, you should be able to do at least 4-7 percent on that as well, so in 4 years you'd have the $57k + another, say, $3-4k a year. You could then actually buy something real...

yes,
if you gonna buy, probably you should think about next 10+ yrs.i know a guy who bought a place in battery park city for 400k then sold it for 750k in 3yrs.
if i do well, my plan is to own a apartment here and then a second house somewhere else. move out when i get tired, but keep the apt. when i have a kid old enough, he/she can take over.
