producing a book

A few of us at work have been throwing around an idea about producing a design book for a studio - I know there are loads of threads on favourite design books, but I'd be keen to hear what makes a good design book?
What's in it that makes you buy it? How do you think you would do it if you had the chance?
I know there are quite a few studio driven books that really just provide a bound copy of the studio folio - we don't want to do that. We want something that will be a resource and an inspiration rather than just a collection of pretty pictures.
What say ye?

Here's my self-promo book. Not a single portfolio piece in there, just a sort of treatise, or illustrated essay...

the cover is first (cos few places let you browse the book)
reputation is second in rank
price is third... I don't have many design books but I've bought enough to know that if it's crappy I rather trade 4 crap ones for a good one.
if it's a book from a friend I know I'd buy it without needing any other reason though.

content is always a key element.
self promo monographs by design agencies sometimes turn out like jerk-off exercises in how cool they are.
Don't forget it will act like your website portfolio in a bookshop.
