Don't know if this link will work, but use Washigtonpost.com for job searches:

I lived there for 10 years working at three tech firms, one newspaper, and one ISP bent on world domination.

I live i Chantilly VA and have a 2bed 1bath by myslef for 990$ which is cheap as shit
I have firends who pay about 1600 for a 2 bed 1 bath in Arlington/Alexandria area. It is high but your salary is equal to cost of living so it all levels out.
u can also try Montgomery county MD if you dont want NoVA Area. someplaces are cheaper.

well if she's going to GW I don't want to be too far away. Some people were suggesting the Arlington area.
$1600 sounds outragious but then i've been lived in a city of that size before. I guess I need to research what designer salaries are in DC. Any ballpark range to expect? I'm a web designer with some print experience. I'm a lead designer w/ 6~7 yrs experience.

madirish, this ones for all those who once lived in Mt. Pleasant.

Two years on Park Ave, Two years on Harvard St. I was there for the riots in the 90's, the crazed gunman who hunted people like wild game...

rent will be AT LEAST as high as you are finding. a source w/ a inside line would be key for you.
lived in DC for 4 yeaqrs and love it. currently live in Lima, Peru though. the market there is great and design value has definitly found it's way back to area. i would think for someone of your experience, (you have a portfolio online anywhere to compare?) i would expect 55k- 70k. ADs make more but they are not as easy to come by in DC at the agencies. smalller botiques will pay less, but there is a great group of them in DC w/ great work.
what area of GW will your wife be in? i have several very good friends in various programs there.
good luck and welcome to the biggest asterisk in the Union! :)

Most likely your salary will be about 60 deends on the size of the studio, which most are studio of around 10 people doing boutique work for political groups, small shops etc.
I woulnd tworry aboutbeing too far you can always hop on the metro to go pretty much anywhere you want especially with the exapnsion they are doing. Arlington is cool thats a fav hangout spot espcially clarendon area. But as with anywhere the closer you are the more $$.

Currently live in the Washington area, and yeah rent is kinda high. Have yet to meet anyone with an inside source though.
madirish, your in Peru? I'm gonna be backpacking around S. America in March with a buddy of mine. I fly into Lima in March. Know of any hostels we could stay at?

Mount Pleasant is the BEST neighborhood in all of DC, hands down. Awesome progressive and design community to it and best neighbors!
I will fight you all to the death to defend that, ya hoors!! :)

wish I had a portfolio put together. I've been too busy getting married last month and doing a bunch of freelance. Now this.. lol
I'll have to block off some time this weekend. An NT critique scares me. The hounds attack when portfolios are out. hehe

rock the house zombie!
i live(d) on Brown St.- house right next to the Brown St. Market. i love MtP- rocks.
Park and Harvard are both good ones- i got friends on both. Damn, MtP is made for having a NT crew there. that would rule...

DC Metro is awesome. Single capital of the USA.

Drop me a line and i am happy to help you out w/ rec's. even for places outside the city if you need them.

I ran a group house for two years on Newton St. Two doors toward 16th from the Brown St Market! It was the big brown house with the huge dilapidated garage with the decking on top. Crazy party place. Lets see....I was there from 94-95

i am in DC Metro and I am single, so i guess JazX is right.

Grew up in Alexandria, moved to NY. Job market was always good, especially if it was goverment related (they pay nice). For your apartment hunting I would def suggest going through a Realtor. Since there is such a demand of "who is better" a lot of the Realty companies are now being paid by whoever is renting the proerty as opposed to you having to fork the cost yourself. In the end all you have is Security Deposit and First months Rent. Since she is going to GW, Arlington would be ideal. You can get a great one bedroom cheap (between the 900-1100 range) if you stay "kinda" on the Metroline ( As in your apartment has a shuttle bus that will take you to the closest Metro station or the public bus will take you)

(Jan 19 06, 07:38)hehhehe you know what I mean. lot of hotties abound and lot of jobs and $
had family in Reston, VA
- madirish0
no way! i know that place. it is owned by a cool older couple now and it is definitly not a party house anymore. :)
you got me beat there for sure, woof- i moved to DC almost 5 years ago now. but i KNOW the neighborhood is still very much the same. let's see, you got Alice 2 doors down from me (lived there 55 years), Maria (lived there 37 years), her brother around the corner on Newton for 40 years, and the list keeps going....
the big-ass ranch house next to your old place and on the corner is where the AD/ Photo Editor of the City Paper lives w/ his family.
i love my neighborhood, for all those NTers out there who don;t know- MtP rules. and that is all there is to say abou that. ;)
