a scratch disk should just be a very small piece (partition) of your internal drive, unless you plan to leave the D2 spinning all day.
when you get the D2, clone your entire internal HD over to the D2, erase and zero your drive, partition however you like with a small spot at the top reserved for scratch, and then restore your system and directories back to the internal drive.

Ok, thanks. I will do that. The problem is that I do not have much room left on my internal drive, mainly because of the large Photoshop files I have been working on the past year.
If I used the ext. disk to copy over all files whilst I partition the internal drive, could I then transfer all of my files back to the internal drive, minus my photoshop files, maybe I could keep these on the ext. disk and save to this in future?
Thanks

yeah an ext. drive is best used for backup.
but if you want to wipe the internal you can't just copy your OS X system folders to the D2. its gotta be cloned.
look up "carbon copy cloner".
but first you should probably spend some time reading the basics of setting up a Mac for optimum performance.

Wish I had the cash for one of those new intel mac's, they look dam sweet.
Oh well, never mind.
