Hi. So, my goal is to escape the red states and high tail it back to Boston by March/April.
In my job search it is appearing that there is an enormous $$ disparity between corporate jobs and small shops. I wasn't prepared for how little the small shops seem to pay. I just unwittingly ruled myself out of a small firm because the salary range I listed (which I thought was safe) was obviously way too high.
What say you Bostonians? Do you starve for the privilege of working in a small shop?

I guess boston is like every other city, if you know the town a bit, you can live whichever lifestyle you choose. If you absolutely must live in back bay or the south end, then, yeah, money's gonna be tight unless you pull insane corporate dollars.
Also, don't let one setback sour you on the whole city. Ask what you think you're worth, don't sell yourself short. You'll get it.

im trying to get out of here and get to nyc. seems its where all the good design jobs are.

well gee mattyd, maybe you'll become a yankees fan, too. They have a better team, you know.

Thanks for the words, Greedo. I don't want to live in back bay (already did that) but don't want to live in the burbs either. Looking at South Boston or Cambridge.
I love NY but Boston appeals to quality of life and I have alot of friends there.

Maybe check out the North End... I've been here for just over a year and am really digging it. The italian food is incredible. The neighborhood is old school and super friendly. Fanueil Hall is across the street. Airport is 2 minutes away. Gov Center, Downtown Crossing and the Theater District are all within walking distance.

North End and Cambridge both have very small and insanely overpriced apartments. North End has the added bonus of crawling with tourists in the summer. If that's your bag, go for it.
South Boston still has some very sketchy parts. I live in Jamaica Plain (still Boston proper), which is getting gentrified faster than you can say 'condominium'. But it has very large old houses, spacious apartments, good transportation, you can still park on the street without losing your mind, and you can be downtown in 15 minutes with the often-overlooked Orange line. :)

mission hill son!

man i used to live on mission hill back when you could still hear the gunshots from the projects. got mugged on my way home once, too, my buddy got stabbed in the back for a dollar there back in 93. But that's all gentrified now, too. Harvard medical school is taking over, they tore down a big chunk, there's GAP now and soon a TGI Fridays; they tore down the projects and re-built them in pastel beach house style and the place is full of future Harvard doctors now.

North End is a good place to visit but I don't want to share my tiny, overpriced apt. with rodents and tourists. :)
I will be subletting my friend's amazing loft in Jamaica Plain for a few months...I like JP. Why does it feel so far away?!
Mission Hill, no thank you. I have a friend who had an incredible place there but she was plagued with car break ins and general neighborhood b.s.
I'm actually more worried about finding a good job than finding a neighborhood at this stage. Yikes.

the farther you get out of the city, the more living space you get for your $$$. Unfortunately you loose alot of the food/bars/shops that make the city great.
Likewise the smaller the shop, the smaller the salary. Some of the bigger agencies have been doing cool stuff lately so you may not have to sacrafice creativity by going corporate.

awww baw-stin...I had a good couple years there at 150 Huntington.
The best of times...the worst of times...I often wonder how I'd feel if I went back.
I sure do fucking miss newbury

150 Huntington? Is that by the museum, Nic? Back in the day I lived at 60 The Fenway. It's a bit strange going back to a place with so much history for me but I'm happy to be going back too.
I most miss the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum. sigh.
Now where teh hell is my job?!
