Client has just asked for a quote to do a content managed website.
Are there any good "off-the-shelf" CMS solutions out there or are you better off building your own?
Thanks.

simple cms.
it was posted on here last week.

There are a few off the shelf products out there, but you'll probably end up compromising on something if you use them. I find they are better custom built each time to get the features you require.
I haven't got any links to any because I make them myself.

depends on the site. there are a bunch of freebies: movable type, textpattern, and wordpress that are pretty decent
and expression engine is good and only costs $99 now i think...
- kelpie0
this would surely also depend on your level of skill, no?

forgot to mention, i'm more of a designer than a techy. We've worked on a few projects before where we've outsourced the backend to a dev company and they've custom built a CMS backend but it's quite expensive.
I'm just trying to find the most affordable solution as i know this client won't want to spend that much money.
- ldww0
what specifically do they want to administrate with the backend?
- kilroii0
it needs to be updated daily with news and figures. it probably own needs 2 cms controlled pages.

i have been playing with modxcms for as few days, and i have to say its perfect, very flexible, easy to connect to flash, front end editing, great support forums..
- Nematoth0
does modxcms have a staging feature by any chance? Where content is modified and then displayed on staging until approved? I couldn't see anything on the website or the forum... if not, then does anyone know of an open source cms that does have this function?

im just experimenting with hotcake, its an opensource ASP solution that has integrated ecommerce, at first look its NICE and ready to run out of the box, no settings need changing !!! i saw it posted on hotscripts.comhttp://www.hotcakes.co.nz

nematoth, with modx you make the changes, than you can leave it upublished, unitl someone approves it and publishes it.
