we're beginning to need a fulltime web person here and i'm trying to mold our other designer into that person. he's got dreamweaver fairly covered and some basic flash but it's the background type stuff that he needs to know, perl, coldfusion, scripting, etc.
How would he go about learning these things? Did you learn on your own? Did you learn on the job? Any advice welcome.
thanks y'all

umm he's a designer gruntt.. does he even want to learn scripting and become a programmer aswell?
Careful or you'll be advertising for web/print/designers/coders/coffe... on craigslist next

I'd bring someone in that already knows these things and have him share the wealth.

if they are print designers then they need to get their head round websites and useability as well as the technical sides of things.
you can be as technical minded as you like but if you are creating sites that people cant use well then theres not much point.
i did multimedia as a support to my graphic design at art college but i learnt the most in my first job working with shit hot peers. even then i was just designing and handing over stuff but i wanted to get into and learn flash so i got shown the basics and went off on my own to learn more. then i got my own site to use for my experimenting and obv needed to get into dreamweaver so i could put it all together. but i knew a basic bit of html from the mid 90s.
best thing is to find and mould a designer with a PASSION for new media and turn them into your web guy.
its different from print design cos thats been the same (really) for the past decade or so since computers were introduced instead of pantone pens. whereas new media is constantly evolving and you need to keep on learning things - and sometimes wont get the time to learn this during work hours. so if that person enjoys it then theyl be more likely to be more proactive outside work hours, working on their own personal projects.

yeah i know. we're a small company in a bit of a financial bind at the moment. i'm trying to keep his job fulltime and this would help. he is willing.

forums, books, tutorials, experimenting and getting your hands dirty etc...

i go with that JazX says, but failing that go with my suggestion of finding someone in the company that has a sparkle in their eye for new media

take some night classes or read books, download other sites, etc.

Just do it yourself you lazy hooor.

actually, I know... do this
trick cosmo into coming to NC, get him super drunk, high and sedated, get some insane brain transplant doctor that's struggling and has already lost his license to transplant cosmo's brain into your buddy's.

Download the internet to a floppy, give it to the guy and tell him to 'learn that inside out'.
