Illy File Error

ok I have a file in Illistrator CS, been working on it for a while ...one day I try to open it and get a error that the file is an unkown format ... I never messed with the name of it or the extension ... any clues out there on why it wont open all of a sudden.... SOB%&*$%#$!! i need that file

osx 10.4 sometimes messes up illy (CS) files

try renaming the file to a .pdf and see if it will open in Acrobat... if it does, try re-saving it and then re-naming it back to .ai

also, CS is a massive piece of shit...we stopped using it and went back to 10. Havent tried CS2 yet.

I tried renaming ..no dice , Im trying to figure out how to change the extension , the file name does not show the extension .. how can i turn on view extensions ... its been a while since i had to do this...

naming files without extensions is dodgey.. i don't know how people work like that.
can't help with w2k.. in OSX you just type in the name + .pdf ?

For XP (which is very similar to win2k in this regard)
To view extensions: Tools> Folder Options>View> Uncheck hide extensions for known filetypes

Not on a PC, but I had a corrupted CS2 file this morning and it opened fine in Illustrator 10, I just resaved it. There was no type though (just a logo file), and I know that CS to 10 is nothing but problems with type.
But maybe it's worth a shot.
