I got a brew kit for xmas and started looking into doing it. It seems pretty complicated. Should I return it and just buy a bunch of beer with the $$?

you are correct!!

The kit and ingredients cost about $130. Plus a day to brew, 2 weeks to ferment, then bottle and wait a month. Crap I can walk to the corner and get great beer in 5 minutes of 3 bucks a pint.

yeah, unless you gonna make some weird crazy beer, you'll be better off just buying beer at the store.

first time I'm just going to follow the recipe as close as possible. If that turns out I might drop a few buds in with the hops and see what that does.

home brewing rocks.
when i was younger a neighbor of ours used to brew his own beer. he took it up a level though.
he'd brew it and have it stored into a keg in his fridge (his basement was full of copper pipes). then he ran tubing through the rafters and up into his kitchen next to the fridge. whenever he wanted a beer he'd just tap his own brew. the shit was amazingly good.
not sure of the process involved but he had a bunch of stuff in his basement. i think his total investment (also being very handy with tools and carpentry skills) was about 600 but he had beer for life. to buy more ingredients was minimal for a kegs worth of beer.

i like to brew beer, but you don't save $ or anything by doing it.
you can, however, make some damn good beer in your kitchen.
if you're looking for a more substantial return on your efforts, look into wine making. we make about five batches each year and it keeps us fully stocked (and drinking heavily!).

just get into it and impress your friends. you will feel good about drinking you're own microbrews too.
the best advice i can give for the beginner: BE VERY CLEAN!! CLEANLINESS IS SO VERY KEY if you want good product.
brew-ha-ha !!
