I use Max with Final Render, maybe VRay soon.
Pros:
Compatibility
Models - you can get any model of anything already built and textured
Everyone else uses it (in my industry - architecture, primarily)
Plugins - gazillion plugins, from rendering to special effects
It's getting betterCons:
Too expensive (although reasonable compared to Maya's Ultimate version)
No down saving (stupidest thing I've heard of)
TONS to learn, but that goes for any of these high end 3D packagesIf you are actually going to pay for it, consider Cinema or Lightwave, much cheaper. I'd lean towards Cinema, as there seems to a be a growing base of users.

Maya.
Even though Max has so much more available to it in terms of add-ons and models and crap, there is something organic and intuitive about working in Maya. It's a more forgiving program when your ideas outweigh your technical know-how. I always found Max much more difficult to grasp.
But that could also be the retard-sandwiches I ate.

primarly, MAX integration with AutoCAD.
the huge number of available plugins & sdk scripting are just a few other reasons I would choose MAX over Maya.
oh and using Brazil renderer.

i prefer maya, feels better if u' r creating characters. i tried max but it seems more technical than maya.
i heard alias bought maya or something... any news? . maya + max would be cool :P

i use to be so all about max, and for certain things i still do prefer max, though now all i do is model in maya and i love it, and the new maya integrates photoshop and illustrator way more seemlessly....i would say go for maya
as for who bought who, autodesk bought alias out...autodesk is the maker of 3d s max, so it will be interesting what happens. i hope they keep them seperate though i doubt they will.
oh little tid bit, if you are ever in a book store and see any alias maya 6 books check out who designed all the covers for them, ahem ahem ;)

i'm a max guy.
be sure not to discount XSI if an intuitive prog is what youre loking for.
traditionally, max is better for polygonal work and maya for spline based.
max does have one helluva community.
