Is it expected that you have the rights to a track you use in your demo reel? If you were to post your reel on your site.

If you made the music track sure.

Yea, but if you didn't? Say I wanted to use an Air track or something.

I would say yes.. but it doesn't hurt to ask, and will they ever find out? maybe. will they take you to court for it? the have the upper hand.

Not legally.

you can just ask to clear it, tell them what you're doing and what it is for, you're not selling or showing a short film or making a music video, they might not care

Before it ever going to litigation, you would be sent a cease and desist letter. At that time, simply remove the track from your reel.
I would be VERY surprised if an artist or label ever found a song used in your reel, let alone ask you to remove it.

still illegal tho.
am sure prod companies get the rights, but personal folio probably not worth it.
some record agencies charge alot of dough- no matter what the cause.
