which raises another question - how do you record real drums?
- zoiks0
If you are looking for really cheap, and are good at post recording set up then use Audacity

I would use Acid Pro if you are doing live instruments.
I don't have a drummer so I have to do all the drums digitally.
You would have to mic the drums and pipe them in through a sound board/mixer.

even if you use the free version of Pro Tools, your still gonna need a Digi001 or 002 for inputs.
I would reccomend the Mbox2, it gives you the software & hardware for like $450 - $500.

remember, I am far from professional. I just do this for my own enjoyment. I am interested in how other people do it though...
like the hardware chain that others use to get the sound from the instrument into the computer.

Good stuff. I appreciate the insight and tips. It's all a bit intimidating. Too many options. I'm thinking Acid Pro looks idiot-friendly.

I woldn't use Acid for recording live instruments at all. I'd use Cubase or ProTools. Acid doesn't compare.

radar, i'm liking the looks of the Mbox2 package.

just found this

I use a mixer and pump my music through that and convert it to go into my mic in. PT then captures the signal through that.

Do some more homework before buying. Test a few "free"/trial versions out before you make the pluge.
Good luck

MBox is solid.

I'll do that. Thanks!

start looking into acoustics and building your own home studio. there are a lot of good things out there today.
- driftlab0
The studio rooms are built, sound-proofed and ready to go.
I just need to square away the software/hardware.

There will be times when I'll want to use synthetic drums, but they have to sound real.
Suggestions?

We use audition were I work (formely cool edit) does the trick alright, but I wanted to mention that the best addition to our studio has been the Mackie firewire onyx mixer.
