forget embedded images, just hardcode them to refer to your server.

Use tables to lay it out. No background images. Link all images absolute on a server. Use inline styles on any text. No javascript or any other gubbins. And you will be fine in most mail clients.
You should really combine it with a text only email for the few clients that don't display html emails.

I use Lyris: http://www.lyris.com/

I use notepad.
And groupmail.

that works too, we just use their tracking service as well. easier

We use the clients own normally. But if you had to track them yuorself, something like that would save you a fair bit of time.

I stick all HTML and Images in my Outlook stationery folder. Seems to work pretty well.

skt, you don't have to use inline styles for type. Just redifine the h1,h2, p, etc.. tags. true?

not eveyone will be able to see the images, you just have to deal with that and make sure you provide alternate content.

you'll be able to tell who can view html and who cant

I include my CSS within the HTML for the E-mail itself. Usually seems to work

You can put css in the head, doesn't do it any harm, but it will get stripped out and ignored by some webmail clients. Hence using inline styles.
