Most peoples' comments on that site are like "aah that's Venice Beach where all the drunks are" but most of those people seemed like normal sober people. Scary that they thought Australia was France, Iran, and North Korea. Someone actually said the US should invade France because there's some friction between the two countries.
Geez, as if America can do whatever the hell they want. The planet does not belong to America. Some jackass even left a comment saying "yeah keep using your american computer and your american operating system on the american internet". Nice defense, buddy.

Funny as it is, really, how different would that be if you did the same vox pop on the streets of the UK or australia

This says as much about the West as it does about America. We're all fucked either way.
It's amazing how easily swayed people are into evolving an 'opinion' that we should go to war with a particular country.

america does for the world what porn does for the internet

What's even more amazing is that none of those people appeared to target Belgium.
What does that say?!
Hmm?
Never Trust a Belgian.

To the contrary I think if you did the same survey on the streets of London you'd find a lot less warmongering than that, and a lot more geographical awareness. If you spoke to a few dudes in white vans you may get other opinions though.
Can't answer for Australia myself.

try doing something similar in aberystwyth and you'll get an idea.

Sadly, 'most people' in the UK read tabloids and have absolutely no interest in the world about and would, I'm sure, in many provinces show similar levels of abject stupidity.
America's a shining light for this kind of ignorance, but the rest of us are rarely far behind..
From my [admittedly small]
understanding of Oz surburbian 'culture' (as oft loathed by Germaine Greer) then 'a large chunk of people' are probably closer to the US than we are in the the UK..
