I've got a chance to go to cancun (for free!), but I don't know how affected it still would be from the hurricane damage. Anyone have any information about the state of things down there?

its mexico... it will always look a shambles regardless of any hurricane that might have passed through.
ps. your trip is FREE! what do you care if it is all messed up?

There will always be a beach, beer, and a bed to put your head.
In Cancun that's really all you need.

Cancun, city proper, sucks. You want to travel south towards Tulum and Acumal, near the Indian ruins. Very nice, cheap and I don't think is destroyed.

I'm going to playa de carmen on Thursday- which is about 1 hour south of Cancun and it's fine. But Cancun got hit much harder.
here are some sites to check

JazX,
did you go to Chichen Itza?
Is it worth going there rather than Tulum? thoughts? suggestions...

My guess is that it is still not ready for tourists. Well, that's what I have heard from the mexican media.
But hey! it's free!!Go to my country, get drunk, pass out, hook up with someone, come back and you'll have some good stories to tell.

Thanks everyone. i was recently down in moneterey mexico speaking at a design conference, but obviously it's interior and wasn't really affected, but the people there were awesome. I don't really have a choice on where I'm going cuz I'm not paying, but realistically beach, beer, cool people - what more do I need?

(Dec 6 05, 08:59)Cool. I'm from there. Did you go to Flash for Mexico? Anyway I hope you enjoyed your stay there.
Of course it wasn't "really" affected, coz it is not near the beach and about 24 hours by car to cancun.

hey tara, hope you're well! chichen itza is absolutely amazing - a totally different scale to tulum. although tulum is a lovely way to escape the eurotrash haven that is playa.

the street vendors in mexico will try to rip you off and are always asking for tips even if all they do is say hi to you. beware, it's a total tourist trap. it's also very slutty and smells of tequila/vomit in some places.
- wadafa0
jeez no don't send me somewhere tropical and amazing if there's drift wood on the beach and a few buildings with no roofs...that'd be a rip off

I've stayed here: http://www.cabanascopal.com
Not too expensive, quiet, great beach, near Tulum ruins.
Both Chichen Itza and Tulum are unique in their own ways. One inland and one coastal. Both worth seeing. Go to Chichen Itza for one night and do the ruins there, then head to Tulum for an extended beach stay.
