Web hosting question...

I'm helping out a non-profit with their website. I have experience with designing sites, but it's not my main thing, so I apologize if these questions sound naive.
Currently, they have their own domain name, but the site itself is redirected to a geocities site. I suggested that, even as a non-profit, they should put up the money to have it hosted. It's not all that expensive.
I told them that traffic and linking problems would arise through geocities, as would their appearance of legitimacy.
Has any web designers ever had to explain to a client why free-hosting isn't the best way to go. What were some of your reasons?

you have a much greater level of control with paid hosting as well as expandability and support
