e-commerce usability

I am doing a mockup for an e-commerce site. I haven't done much e-commerce work so I have a few questions on standards for ease of use. Do you think just having a View Cart button is fine or would you rather be able to see the status of your cart in a small section on each page as well? Is it necessary for the checkout button to show on every page or is it OK to only have it on the View Cart page?
Are there any other aspects that you think of that should be included in more e-commerce sites? Anyone know any resources for e-commerce usability on the web?

i think there should always be a view and checkout button on every page. its all about getting the user through with the least clicks.
durng the checkout its also nice to show the status of the user and how many steps are required.
if it does not have to be there, do not put something on the checkout form, make it as clean as possible.
you should look at alot of big name checkout processes, i think i remember store.adidas.com being really nice.
