i have never used indesign and am trying to help my sister out with it. but she is in another state so i am only guessing at things.
can indesign do layer effects like PSD? she has a image on a white background and would like to watermark it over a dark bg. thanks!

Like Photoshop?
Yes, it has layers. if you had a transparent watermark graphic, you could put it on a layer above the image. you could also put it in the same layer as the image and bring it to the front.
It's much more like Illustrator than Photoshop.

thats the problem the image is not transparent. its a graphic with a white background and i wanted to get her to use the multiply layer effect. i am going to guess that it can not be done if its more like illustrator.

I've never done much with transparent png's, maybe someone else knows a bit more.
But as far as I know, there are no layer effects in InDesign.
Can she do all the images in Photoshop?

The Multiply layer effect exists in InDesign and works the same way as in photoshop. You just won't be able to multiply over black, obviously

thanks, now hopefully she can find it.
