- be confident, but be humble. when you are young, your main objective should be to learn, and be in an atmosphere that fosters your own creative growth. sometimes it's better to go somewhere you'll be making less, but surrounded by better people, because in the end you'll be richer for it.

My first job i got so under paid but was scared to ask for a raise. i made $36k and one day my design director and i had a review and i asked for $47k and he gave it to me.
You have to justify your skills and your talent to them first. why should they give you a raise? not because of standard of living, they will think you can't manage your own money! i know people who makes less and live in NY.
Approach them with a plan, you work 70 a week and you need more money. Shop around and see what else is available for you. Don't just settle.

RADDL. I think I had you beat, I was making just under 30k (canadian) in Toronto at my last job as a web/print monkey.
I think thats like 25k US.
