I always thought the IBM logo was a stroke of genius by Rand.
Just yesterday I discovered that the only reason for the horizontal lines was to improve the horizontal flow of the type—Rand didn't think of it as representing computer type (that appeared that way on early monitors), in fact he said "there's nothing inherent in horizontal lines or vertical lines that says 'computer'".
To me that's like Columbus, who didn't realize he had reached a new continent.

I read it was to make the logo less heavy. To break up the solid mass of the letters.
