I figure you guys are the perfect people to ask...
I'm about to start a new job, and I need to really brush up on my Photoshop skills as well as Illustrator skills.
Can anyone recommend some good books? I know the basics of both programs, but I need to get a little more in depth.
Thanks.

if you're thinking VTC just join the online version. US$30 a month for all titles. just join for a month or two and get what you need out of it.

Thanks for the sites...
But are there any books that can help?
I use Quark and Photoshop daily, but I could know PS a bit better. I need to know a lot about Illustrator.
Any books I should pick up?

there used to be a good "Classroom In A Book" series. Not sure what level you're at though. These may be too basic for you.

I'm art director for a newspaper at the moment, switching jobs in a week...so I'm not so much of a beginner. I know a lot with Photoshop, just need to brush up on paths, masking, filters, etc.
As for Illustrator, I can open a file...that's about it. Any suggestions for a good Illustrator book?

seriously - do like airey said and get a 30 day account with VTC...
you'll get far more training outta that than you ever could in a book.
i find all the books generally give you step-by-step techniques for cheesey tricks and effects that you most likely won't put to use.
VTCs etc give you a complete breakdown of the interface and all the tools.

The Classroom in a Book series for Adobe isn't too bad, as are the Total Training guides. They will act to some degree as a desk reference, but are more designed for training novices or un-trained enthusiasts.
The Total Training books are good in that they include a DVD with quicktime exercise files and content, and give you projects to complete throughout the course of the book.
They're two of the more popular titles I see getting sold in my folks' bookshop... hope that helps...

Thanks for the books, I'll check those out.
