Hi! Anyone know any very good / bad adverts from a semiotics point of view?
Cheers

Being semi-idiotic, I would like to have explained to me what semiotic means.

semiotics / semiology is the science of signs...signs in it's broadest sense that could make you believe one thing or another

do your own research :P

Kind of a self-evident answer, but all language and communication has a sign-to-signifier relationship. Do you mean you're looking for an advert that has the image-to-symbol relationship reveresed or something?

I'm actually asking on behalf of my brother, I've explained semiotics to him, I have researched the topic in the past, but from a fine art angle. He needs some good and some bad adverts, where semiology has worked / not worked. I figured people here would know more than me about advertising etc...any examples I will pass on gratefully!

hello, nike is good from a semiotics point of view. the symbol directly matches the activity and the discourse of what they're selling. it's a check mark, like: "you did it".
