i want to publish (online) a piece about websites over the past year... when using an image/screenshot, do i need permission from the designers.
like the qbn certified image to the left, do they contact the designer first, tell them their doing a piece and which image their going to be using, etc... and ask for permission.

if you are reviewing a whole website and have a screenshot of the website, you might need to be talking to the owner of the website, not the designer... but we see often see reviews of our online magazine where they dont contact first..we dont care..

or are these designers portfolio websites?

If you are writing a review, then as a form of journalism I would have thought that you can use what you like to illustrate your point of view.

owners/designers, there might be a few portfolios as well.
the images would be unaltered screenshots, all desplayed within context - stating who the works is by/for.

Yeah, it's fine. As long as you're not using their name/brand to endorse yourself or make money of course. Still nice though to ask :)
