Sometimes my laptop won't wake up from stand by mode. The only thing I can do is push the button enough to shut it down. Anyone have any ideas or optimum power settings?

i have always been told that stand by can eventually cause power problems, but never tried it enough to test

Yes on a PC. What do you do instead? Use a sceensaver but never standby? Give me some ideas on proper settings.

maybe peeple disagree
but i always thought best to just turn off monitor after 20 mins or so, but never go to standby and never turn off disks

Turn off monitor as in using a screensaver? I didn't know you could turn off the monitor on a laptop.
"never turn off disks"
I've never heard that although I haven't researched it. Any reason why?

Anyway, I have been using standby and shutting down the hard drive and it has been really inconsistent and causing probably more damage than good. Hard restarts, etc. This is my first PC so I really don't have a clue.

My sony laptop has just started doing this. I hybernate it and it takes me about 20 attempts to start the fucker up. Once its up and running it cool, scares me.

if your on pc then you are most likley using windows right... so probably should deactivate hybernate or standby state.. it will eventually be a problem.. > display properties > screen saver > power > power schemes.. and here make sure everything is on never except turn off monitor set it to whatever saves some power .. then in advanced when closing lid = do nothing and in hibernate tab do not enable hibernate :) just turn off computer when not using it or carrying it around...

all depends on what you do with it... I need to login to my PC laptop remotely sometimes, so I have it set in Power Options to turn off monitor at 3hrs, turn off disks at 20min, standby never, hibernate never (screensaver set seperately).

I have problems with it, but not often. Maybe once every two months or so. Basically, I just turn my laptop off whenever I'm not using it (such as when there are no programs open and it's just lying around somewhere). Otherwise, I make sure to turn it off at least once a week. Plus, I have a screensaver. It does hibernate overnight.
