handbrake is the best for going straight to mpeg
if you just want to rip the vob files, look for mac the ripper...both are good programs...

best apps for me to rip dvds are:
dvdbackup
dvd2oneXthe first one rips the dvd into your mac, the second one converts the ripped file into a writable one to fit into a normal DVD.

just realized you dont even need mac the ripper to go from dvd to mpeg4. you can rip straight from the dvd with handbrake.
