I think design is a visual solution to a problem. Design becomes art when you like it.
Just reminded me of countless conversations I've had with tutors in college.

The best defintion I've heard is: Art asks questions, Design answers them.
Which is a clever definition because it sums up the subjective experience of art and the objectively "good" or "bad" measured nature of design.
The only confusion in this issue is that they both draw from similar creative veins.

Definitely check it out blackspade... will really broaden your perspective on art and the role it should play in society...
it doesn't deal with art vs. design specifically... but the discussion will give you the tools to evaluate the value of art and the artist... then you take what you know of design already and come to a conclusion on your own...
Don't look to the dawgs here for a good answer. This topic is tired in these forums and people will dismiss it for that reason however valid the argument. Not to mention the mad amounts of distracting comments that will be left by 12 year olds. Not to say there aren't intelligent discussions going on here because I believe there are. Just few and far between unfortunately...
I'd actually like to start a google group or something of that sort where anyone who was interested could partake in some design discussion/debate. I know that I always have a lot of things in question and haven't found any forum that would do any serious issues any justice.
Anyone interested joining a google group? hit me up if you are down or have any other ideas...
