Dual Monitor Setup

Has anyone any experience with dual monitor setups where the monitors are at different resolutions?
I'm finally caving-in and buying a 2nd monitor, but my dilemna is whether to buy a higher specced, new 'primary' monitor (say, at 1600x1200) or get another 1280x1024 so they sit 'flush', side by side.
I can see the logic in having a lower res'd '2nd' monitor solely for tool palettes etc, with the higher specced for general use and work areas.. but does this work practically? Will this mean my Start and Menu bars (PC) will be all over the place? Or do I just go for an exact-twin to match my current monitor?
Does any of this make any sense, or am I just talking shit again?
Thanks Peeps!

I've a 19" and a 17"
both screwed u to full possible res.
works a treat... can't tell you offhand what the res is on them, will do once I'm home though.
one massive drawback though... space - 2 crts take up a hell of a space, but in winter contribute to heating the room too ;)

Yep, dual monitor here: CRT for the work, LCD (notebook) for other stuff.

i have two 19's ( :)) here at work and we looked at playing round with the res but although I have a great nvidia card it seems to govern the res across both of them??
they do look smart side by side and the same size too

i have different sizes for my 2 monitors. doesn't bother me.
helps me see how the page is going to fit on each page for the web. kinda like it.

nairn, it might sound strange but i got a 17" with 12ms response from aldi[the budget supermarket] for my mum it was £140. Speakers on board and supports dvi. i was really impressed.
i also noticed that staples here have 17" benq for a fiver more also fast reponse time 1280 x 1024 and good viewing angles.
not sure what you found

Just have your menu bar on your primary monitor

Great.. you've all helped me justify buying an over-specced monitor I probably don't truly need..
..but want so much.
Ta all! :)

yup yup two different sizes is very handy for testing sites at two different res's very quickly and efficiently.

I've got a 21 and 19 - works great. i just use the second for email and itunes and palletes.
i've got a bit of a different profile on the second monitor just to give me an idea of how the colors will shift on different monitors etc.
