I am doing a couple of concept designs for a sculptor. Here is the first one. He wanted it simple and clean with emphasis on the work. I have to consider that eventually the site will be data driven with the ability to upload unlimited amounts of work.
The project list is a generic way to break up the work into series until I get more input. The blue 'next project' represents a rolled over link.

i really like the simplicity but it seems like your grid is off with the placement of the text.

is alot of the sculpture like the one you've used in your comps? if so, the 'inter-connected-ness' of the work might be worth some value for the site - ie why not bring together your three nav systems (main / project / detail) into one system? jus' a thought...

I think most minimalist sites in the same vein as yours work only because they benefit from the elegant UI and transitions flash provides, creating a contrast between the complexity of movement and the starkness of design.
Otherwise, it'd be a bit underwhelming, as in your design. Not saying it's bad, just boring.

Looks nice and clean. A couple things:
1) If you access to more of his images, why not use those in the comps? The visual effect is pretty striking with the same image repeated several times, but I'm guessing it will look pretty different once you add the real content.
2) Is this is landing page? Because if it is you might need to add some descriptive text to provide a little context for the user.

I only have a couple of images.
2) Is this is landing page?
It is a page showing how the work would be displayed and organized.

Tighten up the grid.
Also, You might consider taking a really nice tight apropriately cropped photo of some of the work and blow out the image to use as a background. If done right this can come off elegant and intriguing.

Are you referring to the Project List text? It is supposed to be vertically aligned with the WORK nav item. I need to move the Project List left because with out the arrows before it it is off.
The next concept will be more experimental.

I updated these. I am not going too get to deep into them until I actually start working on the site. These are intended to be simple concept ideas.
I was hoping to go 1024 but I found out the guy is running 800*600 himself.
