Can someone explain this strange need to remake films. You would think if a filmmaker lked a movie enough to remake it, they would hold it on a pedistal and not mess with it. I suppose studios see an idea that worked in the past and want to make money of it, but I sems like an ridicoulous idea to me.

if it has been done there is no reason to do it again -- godard
if there is a buck to be made there is every reason to do it again -- hollywood

In my opinion this one of those rare occurances where the remake is a damn good movie in it's own right.
The original obviously is a great piece of filmmaking.

Laslo_Kovacs, 99% of the time it is true what u say, but in this case, this was actually a decent flick;
below i list assorted recent failed, bullshit CRAP remakes;
willy wonka chocolate factory (fuck johnny depp)
dukes of hazard
exorcist
..more to come....

haven't seen the remake. the original is absolutely brilliant. in top 10 on my list.
a friend has a vhs from when it was first released, my viewing was the second and last time he played the tape. crazy film guy.

I have not seen the new version, so I can only make a general comment (agreeing with the Godard quote) that if it has been done before, then that fact would make it sort of a useless piece of work. If a designer were to copy an old design it would be considered a rip off, whereas for some reason, with films, it is acceptable.

i thought the remake was a little weak... although pertinent.
I really liked Wycleff Jean's cover of Fortunate Son by CCR! That was "tight like that*".
