a client wants to increase a 300 dpi image to 1200 dpi to print a 3 ft x 5 ft poster at 300 dpi. is there a special program that would be able to do this? as far as i was always told, increasing dpi and image size that dramatically in photoshop would always produce a bad image.

talk to the printer they have wunderWare ™ which will do this for you. they need artwork at 1/4 size normally

for what distance is the poster to be viewed? bc if you aren't right up on the thing and its viewed from a distance, you probably won't notice a slight pixelation or graininess to the image.
printers do usually need stuff at just 1/4 size. talk to them let them figure out the best way. if you are printing it inhouse, try a few different things and do some test strips.
you might be able to increase the size and decrease the dpi and print it large format at like 100dpi
again it depends the distance you are viewing it at.

the client is in canada and has their own printer. i believe they want to use the image as a poster in a store.
i think i will tell them to talk to their printer to see what he recommends.
