So what is the best area to live in? I hear people who live north say that south stinks, and people from south complain about traffic upnorth.
Suggestions?

really all of the traffic there sucks.
the roadway where there is a road on top and one on the bottom, stick to the road on the bottom. if you get up top and in a traffic jam you're fucked and can't get off.
north side i thought was nicer in terms of places to live.
you are going to fall in love with 6th street. some of the best live music i've ever heard and they shut the street down fridays and saturdays so it's kinda like new orleans. great stuff.
i have a very good friend in austin right now. he's loving it.

almost moved there last year, well there or Phoenix. Great town from what I hear. Numero Uno for singles in the US

Traffic is terrible everywhere there.
North is just an ever-expanding expanse of suburbs. Within 10 years Waco will be a suburb of Austin. :DIf I remember correctly, all the rich people live in the hills in west austin.
Great city though. Spent plenty of time there growing up and during college visiting friends there. My family lives about an hour south of there now, so beautiful.
If you can stand the heat in the summer and love outdoors stuff, camping, hiking, biking, rivers, etc. you will love it.

I'm too much of an urbanite to live in some newly developed suburbian area. I think I would shoot myself.
maybe that's your cup of tea though

Your best bet would be to live near the campus. Such a great area, great people, plenty to do, close to downtown, etc.
I wish I'd gone to school there, but went to UT Arlington in the DFW area instead. Was down in Austin all the time visiting friends and such.
My favorite place in Texas is close by, Enchanted Rock State Park:

Word of warning in Austin:
If you buy and wear a t-shirt that says "Keep Austin Weird," they kill you.

(Nov 15 05, 09:03)hahaha. Does this apply to the beer koozie's as well?
- Sven_sk0
i heard they shoot the real world there. maybe you could get your hands on some of those episodes and it would help.
mtv seems to give a pretty accurate representation of the cities it sets up in.

north side is nice. my sister lives up in the arboretum area in a older community. a little quieter. still austin is a small town so everything is relatively close.
the areas west and north of the UT campus are coveted by the hipsters and college types.
central downtown is pimp if you got the bling.
- demafleez0
yes, the women in austin are hotter than the weather!!

I hate beer koozies. (can't believe I just typed that, it's one of the words I never say.)
Half the point to a cold beer in the summer is to keep your hands cold. If you need to insulate it to keep it cold, you're drinking beer the wrong way.
Summer beer is for pounding, not sipping like Chardonnay!

I lived in Austin for 6 years during and after college. If you're on this site, you should go to the south side. The north is lame. Anywhere near south congress is going to be cool. There are some good places in hyde park as well. That's probably my favorite area.
And yes. you will and should be shot if you ever wear something that says 'keep austin weird.'

One of Austin's many gems is Barton Springs, where you can go in the summer and see many of the previously mentioned "beautiful girls" out in the sun.
