hello all.
I've just received an e-mail from a client explaining that "he would love too" but is unable to give me any payment for a website design I'm doing. He wants to pay me further ahead (when there is enough money in the company).
previously we had spoken about payment and agreed that I would have something as compensation for my work. I mentioned a number to him which is about 1/4 of what I would charge otherwise.
Now I get this e-mail and have sent off some sketches that he really liked. Sounds to me like he's just trying to get some free work.
Anyway. How would you deal with this? Finish the layout anyway and wait for payment? Cut it all of until he can pay?
I really like the design and would like to have in my portfolio. But at the same time - I need to pay my rent.
Any words of advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
andreas

IMHO...
Don’t go on... Use this design for a client that will appreciate your work and pay you for it...
You can find MANY bad clients...you will give his the “confirmation” to go on with this to many other professionals...
You will work hard for nothing.... So it’s better not to work at all...
Try to tell him that you can’t go on with any money.... He is playing a hard game; you must play it as well...
These from my experience...

don't do it.
it's about time people respect this job. they use that "need of portfolio" shit to hook you up.

no money, no work. as simple as that.
I haven't experienced this kind of situations many times. The last time I simply asked the client to meet and talk about it and as I saw we were going nowhere I simply said thanks for considering me for the job but I will not work this way and stood and left.

tell him to bugger off. keep your design in your folio and look for another paying client.
when you get your car serviced do you ask to not have to pay? answer = no.

It honestly pisses me off everytime I hear of something like this.
Do clients have shit for brains and can't understand that this is a job and that we paid to get an education just like a laywer or a doctor did?
Why the hell do they think they can get away with something like this? We all exchange money for a service or a product every single day so why not pay for the service that a designer provides?Screw him!

Tell the client that you are very busy and simply do not have the time to work for free.
be nice, he might come back with paid work.
The other thing to remember is to make sure he knows that he CANNOT use your designs elsewhere. There are a lot of twats out the that will work for free and if the design has been done it will be easier for him to find someone "just to knock it together"
