the good old propaganda line "religion is the opiate of the people" could be updated with more modern terms as follows, "religion is a memeplex that acts like a virus in the mind", (which of course is funny in a meta kind of way when memeists concede that the theory of memetics is itself also a memeplex that acts like a virus in the mind, smirk)
somewhere back in this thread someone asked if, instead of the "neodarwinism/intelligent design" debate at hand, if we could find a similarly split science/religion topic to discuss instead, i vote we discuss the following:
physicalism/spiritism, brain/mind, is the thing we call our "mind" just a term we use for the way our "brain" seems to behave? or is there more to our universe than just the physical?
if there is, are the physical sciences capable of (or even interested in) studying the non physical part of our universe? if not, are the social sciences capable? i mean they are more than interested, but are they capable? or rather, are they capable of convincing the physical sciences that they are capable and credible?
anyone? anyone?

No, because religious people tend to be dualists, and non-religious tend to be naturalists. Same argument really. Religious people apply supernatural properties to all the things they don't know, some even deify their own ignorance.

giggle, "above my head"? nice, some people do believe that the "soul" resides above the heads, kind of like how in some video games theres some kind of info design thing floating above the other players heads
- buKabu0
ah yes, "dualist" was the word i couldnt remember, thanks

This one time I thought a halo was floating above my head but it was just the Giants hat I was wearing.

This is like the Mac verses PC debates.
If you are a true believer in one or the other... a faithful believer in God or the disbelief in him.
Then there would be nothing to argue about.

giggle, this one time i thought i had quake like quadamge and regeneration enveloping my entire body, but it was just that i was high as a kite
oh, and, in the "prophecy" movies, the soul is in the back of the throat, and i guess, acording to the movie "pulp fiction", it can be extracted of the back of the neck (or the back of the head, as in the "matrix" movies)
- buKabu0
design as in "intelligent design" or design as in "crit me"?

i dont know, i dont think its like the mac/pc debate, i mean i get the whole "its up to personal taste" and all that, but are we really saying that physicalism and dualism are really just a matter of opinion? for that matter, are we really saying that evolution and creationism are really interchangeable? i mean in my experience (and in this thread too) it seems there are narrow minded snobs on both sides, scientists scoff at religion, religious moms cry bloody murder when ID isnt taught along side evolution, seems pretty heated to me
