Since IE is no longer supported or being updated for Mac, what is your position on building sites for all browsers? Is this extraneous work?

yes.
there is no reason in the world why any designer or developer should be accomodating for a browser that is not even supported by it's creator.
if you have this question here because a client is insisting, tell them to just read the M$ site on there own position on that combo.

ie is the only browser that doenst follow basic browser standands that all others have no problems following.
after designing a site on a mac and previewing in safari, and ie, it looked completely different on pc ie..
makes no sense.
[and when i say design, i mean design assist i guess, i'm hardly a designer.]

It's a wasted effort for sure. I think a fair comprimise would be allowing a site to scale down while still being technically usable, but I wouldn't recommend spending much, if any, effort on this.

I usually dont consider it, but a while back a client called me up bitching about hsi site. He was talkin about all this weird stuff. I had tested on mac and pc, so i was stumped.
Finally, i asked what he was using. Sure enough, os 9 with IE.
I was like, "you know that you are in a group of less than 1%, right?"
He was convinced though, that a lot of people would have that same config, so I ended up writing some hacks to fix it up.lesson is - ask your clients what their target browsers are first.
