Hello Mr Dinky
"i started mine off my HD
after my mac death incident, i made a OS mirror on a external
if my mac dies again and i know it will, i can boot up from external and get files off of it
havent tried but in theory it should work

make a journaled external drive.
mount it as part of your drives.
start from CD and install the os on to that drive.
and when you mac dies and it will, start from cd and change your boot order to the external with os.
thats my theory

yeah, still theory it is. careful there.

one thing i tried. i partitioned my drive and installed another os on the same HD, i could boot from either one and swap files

that sounds good, if it works, my ibook is going wierd. So i might try that.

is your ibook stalling when launching programs?
if it is, your HD is about to die, save your files

i give you about 4 more reboot till it completely dies, thats what happened to me

Nope it's not stalling, just periodically taking ages to do things. I am backing up pretty much constantly just in case.
I have a feeling it is itunes related, seemed to start playing up around the time i installied the new look one.
Or it could be because it is close to being full to the brim of work (which is backed up) and music, (which at the moment isn't)
It has been doing it for about two weeks on and off, tis fine at the moment with no itunes running.

this is what happened to mine..
first it start to take forever to do simple things like open a new browser... like 10 sec than to 2 min.
then it started to stall.
after a while my HD died

- it actually sounds like it is hunting for stuff on the hard drive. If i leave it for ages (1hour) it eventually sorts itself out.
