Got a front-end menu system for a training project done in flash... basically, it launches PDFs and PPS (PowerPoint show) files from the option you select.
Having a bit of trouble 'cause it kinda messes up when it loads the file (acrobat reader execution etc...)
Anyone else got a menu that lauches files and not apps in flash?

Run it from Firefox and make sure you have the acrobat plugin. It should just open in a browser window then.

Only Flash 5 can open up EXE files correctly LOCALLY (ie. PPT and PDF exe's). Flash will open up a PDF in a browser bc of the PDF plugin. Newer versions of Flash do not allow this bc of the new security features that Macromedia put on bc some dumbass decided to make a Flash virus. You may find software that 'says' it can do it but it only works on Flash 5. If you don't need it as Flash 6 or above, use Flash 5 in ur publish settings and it should work fine.

if yr making a cd rom you can use a .bat file to launch the app and call the .bat file from within flash

(Oct 28 05, 06:15)That's what a guy here has done actually... it works, but looks messy 'cause you get a dos window appear for a second before it launches the app...
Thanks for the replies guys...
There are a certain few who always restore my faith in the usefulness of the PVN :)

for this type of thing I've always used a shell app called Swf studio.
http://www.northcode.com/
to create flash stand-alone apps.it enables you to call all sorts of files in their native applications (very quickly), set application focus, add app icons, read /write to db's, csv's...
pc only tho.

there is a way to make the dos window never open but still run the script although can't be guaranteed. the northcode thing is worth a look

davi-t....
SWF studio will let you open anything with the 'ShellOpen' or 'Run.App' commands =
fscommand("ShellOpen", "%ORG%\\whatever.exe");
I use it all the time.
