Phoenix does an amazing job, but the story is severely lacking. There is very little backstory to where songs came from, how they were recieved, his creative struggle. They (the songs) just pop out of thin air at the right moments, and his addiction takes center stage.

I want Phoenix to get an Oscar. He'll definitely get nominated. Hopefully anyway.
I was never into Johnny Cash's music but Phoenix's presence will make me want to see this film.

I saw it last night, and totally agree with fate_
One thing that kind of bothered me was that they made the drug taking to be recreational when in both Cash's and Elvis's bio they were really to deal with hectic schedules, and we're actually prescribed.
Story definitly could have been better, kind of over the whole "drug" thing...unless it's like gons n' roses or the doors, then that shit is ill!

I've been a Cash fan since before his death. Kinda icky to see all the goths and emos suddenly "know" him. They couldn't tell the difference between Cocaine Blues and Folsom Prison Blues.

saw this last night and really enjoyed it. Both the leads are excellent, but I agree with the gripe that the story doesn't let you see where the songs came from. Surely that should be the real point of the film?
Great tunes though, and big JP does a bang up job in the performance parts, especially in Folsom...
Any more ukers seen it now?
