I want to create text with a background color/swatch if possible in Illustrator CS, like this http://www.fosa.overflow.nu/dixo…

Is there some reason you can't simply draw a box around the text in a contrasting color from the background and text?
or, put this way, Do you need the 'text selected' looking piece to have the text cut out of it?

i'm not sure how to reply to this one.. doesn't get any easier.

yes evan, thats exactly what im trying to do. I need it for pretty much text and I would really like to skip fitting all the boxes to my text..
I mean i want it to 'adjust' to my text.

yeah, I have to say I'm confused by the question. Not to be rude, but have you never used Illustrator before, or am I just not understanding what you're saying?
- arkiku0
like css..
sorry if i cant explain it right
- horton0
select your text and adjust the color to match background... ?
+ extra points if you use the eyedropper to sample the BG fill color.
+ extra points for creating a custom swatch in your palette.

I see now.
hmmmm... either use a mask or convert that text to out lines and subtract from the "selected area" shape

thats a plug-in for 8-10 that does it, but i need some way to do it in CS or CS2
- Point50
so how are you going to use this? Is it something you're going to do in css or keep in illustrator? You should be able to just make it static if it's for print or a non-Flash piece, right?

(Oct 25 05, 10:52)Illustrator is a drawing tool... its not going to automatically fit a white box behind your text as you type.
type up your text and start drawing boxes.. welcome to the wonderful world of graphic design.
sorry to be sarcastic, but common.
- arkiku0
its just static, vector based files.
- Point50
OK, I see. You're trying to figure out how to make it so a filled boxed-in shape uniformly fits your text as you create it.
... aside from the fonts that are built like that, I have no idea.
sorry

haha horton, its cool :)
well, thanks anyway guys! not that simple as i thought it would be.
thanks

oh common a plugin? how much text/ pages are you talking about... ?
type up your text, get the pen tool, hold shift to lock into 90° and start drawing around your text.
unless you got pages its only gonna take a couple minutes.
- arkiku0
ok.
do you think it would be easier to do it in indesign?
