Hello:
Am new to the community here and I am looking for some input on online-education.
I am looking to make a mid-thirties carrer change, and have been looking at the AA and BA graphic design degree programs at the Art Institute of Pittsburg. At this stage in my life, with a wife, two kids, and a house, I don't think I am going to have the time to put in at the 'ol bricks-and-mortar schoolhouse.
Is online education cheesy and frowned upon by potential employers (and peers, for that matter)? Does anyone have any experience with the Art Institute schools?
Thanks in advance!

Its all about the work that you CAN do, not where you went to school. Better schools can give you better training etc, but in the end is what you can do that counts.
I went to the Art Institute in Philly. My first job (currently self-employed), I got snagged within the first week...overtop of all of the university students that applied at the same time. Although, almost everything I know now I tought myself (Flash just came out when I started using it). Am I that old already?
Just come to NT often and listen to what the folks have to say here. You'll learn a lot quickly.

Have you taken some basic introductory courses to see if this is the direction in life you want to take? The AI isn't cheap and with a family, etc. it's a big investment for a career that doesn't pay exceptionally well for a large number of designers.

But, if it's your passion then go for it. Check into all the schools in your area and determine what is best for you.

I don't bring home a huge amount now, about $35k, so I am hoping I won't dip below that level! Otherwise, I think I'd be fine.
You mention that AI isn't cheap; I haven't been able to find any info on that and am afraid to contact them for fear of being hounded to death via phone & email. What's 'not cheap'?
And I think it's safe to say that my passion lies in creating; not necessarily design, per se, but I love photography, computers and drawing, so it seems a natural fit.
I was a student at MICA in Baltimore back in 1990. Man, if only there had been more technology and less pot, I may have actually graduated back then...I don't bring home a huge amount now, about $35k, so I am hoping I won't dip below that level! Otherwise, I think I'd be fine.

man just take a night class or community college class on the weekends. Interacting with others is super important creatively. Where you go doesnt matter much, look at david carson

20/20 with Barbara Walters did a show just on the Art Institute.
the school itself doesnt care for the students in placing them with any careers, they only care for the dollar at the end of the day.
this is a very scary thought as the market then gets flodded with people who really arent trained to their full capacity nor did they obtain the real skills to get them past the basic level of training.
you can learn a lot more thru on job training than any school out there can provide. also you dont need a degree stating how well you can conceptualize design itself.
dont waste your money with their bs lines in landing you any career or work, as they only care about you giving them the money to pay their rent.
this episode was maybe 2 months ago, i am sure if you contact the show itself they will provide you with a more concrete understanding to why the AI is a bad place to lose you hard earned cash, that really you should be saving for your family.
there should be other options you can find instead of the art institute.
good luck!!!

I started at the Colorado Institute of Art then fell for a girl in Ohio...I transferred to Pittsburg for a day, hated the city and couldn't find good housing so i convinced the Ohio girl to move back to Colorado with me. I'm not sure if it was all the pot but the girl moved back to Ohio, I dropped out of CIA. I seemed to get a good job with only an associated degree.

I knew one person who had a partial or maybe full scholarship to go there. A few years later he is doing newspaper ads for a local newspaper.
