What player, like winamp, windows mediaplayer, etc. would you recommend? The lesser memory it uses, the better.

if you're using windows, don't use itunes. it eats ram like nobody's business. if you have an ipod then get ml_ipod for winamp.
other than that it's basically interface preference. i use winamp 5, but i know a lot of people who still use winamp 2 or 3. there's enough interest worldwide so there's plugins and skins galore to make it do anything, but WMP is probably optimized by ms to use the least amount of ram. i don't use it cause i can't stand the look of it.

winamp and itunes are still the best... i like winamp for its skins that minimize really small, but it doesn't connect to my ipod

ml_ipod requires you to buy the full version of winamp though... balls

I'd have a look at foobar2000 for audio.
http://www.foobar2000.org/It takes some work to customize it to your own needs. I also believe there is an addon to connect it to your iPod. Look for foo_pod or something similar in the foobar forums.
