Ohio State University seems to treat their grad students real well. You should check them out. I went there for undergrad, and the graduate students in the different disciplines that I knew* enjoyed there time at OSU. *(Painting, Glass)
In any event good luck with your search.

just graduate from risd.
the main man, tom ockerse, just stepped down as chair and bethany johns has recently stepped in...so i can't really respond to how the program is as of today.my guess, given that she graduated from risd, under t.o in the '80's, is it is still a pretty conceptual based program with an empahsis on semantics and semiotics. i had a blast while there and would not trade the experience for anything else i have done to this point.
the people you meet (in class, out of class, etc) and the people who come to lecture/teach are top notch. graphic design IS art. and designers HAVE a voice and obligation to creating beautiful communication are a large part of the thinking at risd.
if you aren't familiar with your process, you will be when you finish the program. risd is all about concept and process, in addition to sculpting the verbal+visual equation.
i learned a ton and still keep learning even after i finished. i recommend it as a school if you are serious about thinking about design and making design through thinking.

I went to SCAD (www.scad.edu) for my BFA, and I thought I got a good eduacation. I had great teachers, access to a lot of great resources (labs, awesome library, etc.). It's also a pretty cheap city to live in (compared to NYC).
Because I wouldn't go to the same school I got my BFA, I would probably go to SVA in NYC for my MFA. They seem to have a good reputation, and have really awesome professors like Paula Scher.
