Bonsoir tout le monde,
I am currently developing my own links portal a la netdiver, styleboost, wellvetted, etc. (well, hopefully it's a patch on any of the above...)
I am curious to know what you folks like in terms of existing portals?
What sort of things would you want out of a new links portal?
What sort of functionality, etc?
Don't worry, I'm not asking you to design/build it. Just your thoughts are enough...
Easy,
Guy

a fairly decent database search engine. I can usually remember which site something was posted at but my concept of time falls short (it was at a portal that needed to know the exact day the link was posted). This sucks when you need something you remember being posted last spring sometime.

i'm in the process of doing the sme thing but more on a personal basis though outside links will be welcome
the things that mattered most to me when i was setting everyting up is inputting the link by type so only those type of links can be accessed and searched
also
don't delete the past
that's what i hate around here, everythings deleted in two months
why archive it?
searching is useless if the actual info has been deleted

Nice one mayo.
So something that gives you a lot of different search options - ie. by date, genre, etc...?Cheers,
Guy

version3 - I'm with you - it would be great if there were archives.
That is something up there on my priorities - to enable people to view 'old', classic sites - with nothing disappearing. I plan to have an interactive ratings system, whereby visitors contribute to the 'value' of a given site...

or at least an open database. Not like a 2004, 2003, 2002 deal. I want to type in the words or something and have it come up whether it was posted last week or 2 years ago.

So more sort of keyword/phrase based search system.
But with details of when the site was originally posted.
Styleboost has sthg similar.
A nice idea and one that i feel i should incorporate...
- version30
my idea:
when entering a link have preset categories: video, resource, typo, etc. that you have to choose before submitting
be able to sort by those categories
have keyword searches that search EVERYTHING included in an entry; url, title desc. etc
again never delete an active link
if links die from articles expiring or files moving being removed have a flag option that users can notify you. then you can verify and delete if necessary
no user priveleges to set up that way, i'd rather any visitor could leave a link, not just registered users

Not hugely dissimilar from my plan mate - I'll have a few different droopdowns allowing you to search by category (agency, blog, experimental, music, etc), date added, rating (I plan to let signed up users ratesites), most clicks, etc.
Do you have a URL for what you've been up to version3, or is it still just an embryo of an idea?

As far as presentation goes, I like portals that have nice sized thumbnails, a la http://www.styleboost.com or my own little link site http://www.fatemedia.com/bodhi .
- mayo0
oh, and maybe some sort of NSFW indicator on applicable links. Lord knows I've been burned by that a few times. >:(

LOL :)
- mayo0
go ahead and laugh, meanwhile a red-faced mayo is considered the office pervert
which i prolly am, but if i'm going down, its gonna be with my own shit >:(

Good call _fate -
I love styleboost. Big thumbnails are on my agenda - I also plan to have the screengrabs in flash, so you can scroll thorugh a few different images as opposed to just one....

the abilty to block spammers from posting again
to keep people from posting ads for their stupid stuffed koala 800 times
- fate_0
scarabin, I don't think any good portal is user submitted. Take the PBS for example. Shit, short shelf life, and filled with spam/useless stuff.
So make it like the NTB, only a dozen editors at most.

As much as large thumbs are nice and easy to use, I would prefer an option to show all, 10 at a time sucks.
(bit like the "view as" option on a PC i.e details, lists, icons, etc...)
