I am afriad that, on the whole, you yanks are far less aware of the 'outside world' than most europeans are.
That's not a dig at you Jaz, or you Nathan, but generally speaking America is a very insular country, completely out of touch with what is happening around the rest of the world.
There is a reason that less than 20% of Americans have passports. In the EU the number is probably closer to 60%, if not more.

I would agree jevad, imo, it has to do more with US of A being so geographically large and there are so many places that most people here never even see in their own country. On top of the fact, that overall we're a prosperous bunch. Poor here is hardly poor in other less fortunate countries.
