Everything. the whole country is full of new things. Everything can be an inspiration.
Something you should defintelly do is go to akihabara, which is the electronics district, they have some of the newest and coolest gadgets around. Buy something here because electronics in japan, specially here are cheaper than in the us. You could buy an external hard drive or a digital slr for an amazing price.
Go to the usual places, shinjuku, akihabara, roppongi, ginza, odaiba....
If you do get the chance to go outside tokyo, go to Kyoto and Osaka. Kyoto is great to see really traditional things of Japan. Osaka is definetely a cool city. Osaka has many cool and crazy shops and the people have the most interesting and craziest fashion style from all of japan.
There is district in osaka called Minami that has some good shops and tons of slutty girls like to hangout here.Don't forget to go to nightclubs or restaurants/bars with themes. For example I remember these two restaurant/bars that had as themes, prision and hospital.
Each table was a cell and the staff were dresses as police or inmates, etc... in the other one the waitresses were dressed as nurses and some drinks were served in test tubes or as if it was serum.Of course take tons of pics of meaningless things and enjoy the view coz you'll see how some japanese girls don't care about showing their undies :o)

out of curiosity - how much would you budget if you wanted to travel around the country for say, 3 weeks?
I've heard it's stupidly expensive, but i'd wholly love to go - I just don't want to have to spend thousands of pounds (yen, maybe)...

he'll tell you all that you need to see in tokyo.
i was just there and took a visit down to kagoshima, which is the southern-most point in japan, where we climbed a volcano before going to a sand-onsen, where they burry you in hot sand on the beach (from the volcano) and you jump into cold spring water!

Tokyo ain't bad, just don't take cabs. You'll spend about $10-$15 a day riding the subways if you really get arond. About $30-$40 in food, and a decent room (a closet with a bed) in a nice part of town will run $60-$100 a night.
Of course if you're stupid like me and spend $300 a night at bars and strip clubs and dance clubs, you'll stay much shorter.

Tokyo is cheaper than london and most other euro cities, especially if u eat lots of noodle salads and cheap yukky sake from their 711's. Harajuku is supercool and be sure to check out the cosplay fashion, especially every sunday outside the temple next to harajuku station.... u will see outfits like this http://www.flickr.com/photos/561…
and more....Have fun!

"guy in spandex sperm costume being tickled by a woman in a super villain outfit while tied to a giant cross"
wow. that's from the link that Bluejam gave. The guy was describing videos he saw for sale in Japan.
