hey,
i just finished reading "thinking with type"...the kerning section was about two pages, saying something about being attentive to letters like "V,Y,W,T,L," and it had a couple of examples.I was wondering if there are any online resoures or texts that go into kerning more further? or is that knowledge enough and it just comes with experience?

TIGF, i'm a typography noob, and i feel 40% smarter after reading it... well i mean i'm looking at stuff a lot differently than i did before and it was a very enjoyable read, though im sure other books go a lot more in depth
Jager, thanks, i saw that book at the book store, i will investigate!

I'm sure there is a whole book devoted to kerning, but the madness has to stop. 2 pages, plus your own sound judgment, should be enough. Don't you think?

elements of typgraphic style is great, but it's making me a tad nutty about type right now.

Peter, I'm new to this, so it was just a question. I'd think it would be egotistical to read a two pager on design and think that's all i need to design, as there are certain techniques involved.
granted sound judgement must come into play, i just want to be aware of any basic foundations/approaches if there are any.

Wasn't my aim to come of as negative. Sorry if I did. My only advice is that you'd do fine with the basics. Especially if you grace every piece you work on with simple (but noticable) kerning.
Still amazes me how many art related magazines out there skips out the extra few minutes it would take them to kern.

no worries man, im just trying to get insights. its cool though cause for the longest time id read people on this site beitching about kerning this and that and i'd be wonder why...and just after reading a bit of it, i'd notice it a lot everywhere...which got me thinking...do non-designers even care about kerning seeing as how i never really noticed it before until reading about it? its intriguing that way...anyhow, just getting my learn on.

"Kern King" is helpful if you're working on a typeface:

Print it out in your typeface.
Look for problem pairs.
Fix them.
Repeat.

I find with kerning, the main thing to do is train youself to trust your your eye; same goes with alot of type related stuff. Optical alignments, and visually even textures across a page or the inter-character spacing across a word.
Alot of the time I tend to forget about the letter-pairs that have issues and just use my own judgement. After a while you just get use to it and it sorta becomes second nature.

I've got that book too!
You should check out another book in that series, Grid Systems.

Good call negativespace. There are Kerning Crimes everywhere.
there should be a task force organized.

You got it. That book, the typography book, and the Merz to Emigre: Avant Garde Magazine Book I have at home and I'm in heaven.
The power of some of the layouts of avant garde stuff blows my mind.
Like you said, brutally simple layout arrangement, but with the right color and type and it becomes priceless.
