What newspapers that you feel are well designed? As far as layout, imagery, content, typography, etc.

I have been studying the design of newspapers more lately. Very different form anything I've done.
Do you know does the person who does the design just do a generic template they follow and add content to on an ongoing basis or does the designer have to maintain the content to make sure everything fits properly everytime.

renovated building feeling... whats that?
- MLP0
i've worked at a newspaper for four years... every page is different... its wholly dependent on your lead time. like feature pages are generally planned out further in advance and have more in depth type shit - infographics, sidebars, illustration, etc... while hard news sometimes just takes on a photo and some pullout facts. i love how you have to think on your toes, but got sick of it because the hours are awful.. you work like 3pm-1am aka teh suck

thanks, so you have to adjust the layouts sometimes based on the days content?
- MLP0
like you know.. they take an old warehouse and put offices in it where you have exposed ductwork, brick, etc... so its all old and rustic, but then you hvae all this high tech IT and forward thinking business happening in there... so its like the newest of the new thriving in the old structure... its like a dude living in a posh loft or something in greenwich village

Difficult to say seed, I guess each newspaper is different.
But I think you are right in that an initial 'template' is agreed on and the idea is to follow that.
I guess in the newspaper industry, with the tight deadlines an all, there's a lot of 'flyin' by the seat of yer pants" type design that goes off.

yeah... every day before design starts there is a budget meeting where editors will read off their content with art directors and photographers... so you have to adjust your section based on ad placement, story length, story importance, other content... same kinda meetings happen further out for special sections and big feature pages

... as far as everyday stuff there is a library of stuff that is used as a constant - mug boxes, pull quotes, pullouts, fonts, graphic standards/styles, etc that keep the newspaper's design, but its just like putting together a puzzle for that next day

(Oct 3 05, 13:30)Hahaha - like I said - flying by the seat of yer pants!
Nearest I've come to that is doing programmes for football (soccer) matches. Still working on the job the midnight before the game!
Hahaha! - no wonder there were so many mistakes!!!
